A bit of history (Saint Louis)

In search of new business opportunities, the French back the Senegal River, the English venture in Gambia. Each other and reflect the same hegemonic ambitions.
In 1638, a French navigator Lambert dénomé installed a home on the island of Bocos in the middle of the Senegal River.
In 1659, Norman other Caullier Louis, decides to move this house to another island: Ndar.
Closer to the ocean and better protected from floods, it is more an almost impregnable strategic site. Thanks to the river, it moves to the starting point for all kinds of expeditions to the inland.
A defensive position is therefore built on the site of the current governance.
This position is then transformed into a fortified colonial trading including slave houses, shops, kitchens, prison chapel, barracks, cemetery and gardens. For security reasons, the first settlements were built near the fort.
The island is named Saint-Louis-du-Fort in homage to young French king at the time, Louis XIV.Fondée in 1659, on an island strategically located near the mouth of the Senegal River, between the mainland and the Langue de Barbarie, a narrow strip of land that sinks into the Atlantic ocean, St. Louis is a city steeped in history.
